Saved or lost

Which heritage buildings will Ontario save before January 1, 2027?

Listed properties come off municipal heritage registers at their removal date, January 1, 2027 for most, unless council first issues a notice of intention to designate. Once off, they can't be listed again for five years. We count every property in the municipalities we track, updated daily. What the deadline means.

How we count

  • At risk: on a municipal register as listed (not designated), with a removal date still ahead and no live notice of intention to designate. Most removal dates are January 1, 2027; a few listed since 2023 have later ones.
  • Saved: a notice of intention to designate or an individual (Part IV) designation since January 1, 2023 (when the deadline rules began), from municipal notices we read or the register's own designation date. Whole heritage districts designated in that time (Part V) protect areas rather than the listed buildings the deadline is about, so they aren't counted here.
  • Lost: removed from the register or demolished since January 1, 2023, including listed properties whose removal date passed with no notice.
  • Counts cover the 32 municipalities we track (coverage), not all of Ontario, and depend on what each municipality publishes. Not legal advice. Confirm status with the municipality.
