Wilson St, Ferguson Ave N, Cathcart St: 22 listed buildings, side by side

22 at-risk listed buildings within 0.8 hectares. Designating them one by one is slow; a heritage conservation district study could cover them together.

Ask for a district study

Under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act, council can designate an area for study and then adopt a district plan. A letter from residents and heritage groups, with the buildings listed, is how many districts begin.

Subject: Request for a heritage conservation district study: Wilson St, Ferguson Ave N, Cathcart St, Hamilton

Dear Cultural Heritage Planning, City of Hamilton,

I am writing to ask that the municipality study the area around Wilson St, Ferguson Ave N, Cathcart St for designation as a heritage conservation district under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act.

The area holds 22 listed heritage properties close together. As listed properties, they come off the municipal heritage register on January 1, 2027 unless council acts, and cannot be listed again for five years. Designating them one by one is unlikely before the deadline; a district study would consider them together.

The properties are listed here: https://thepatinarecord.ca/districts/hamilton-14

Please consider asking council to designate the area for study, and let us know how residents and heritage groups can help with research and consultation.

Thank you,
