Save 14789 Sodom Rd (St. John's United Church)

It is on Niagara Falls's heritage register as a listed property. Unless council issues a notice of intention to designate, it comes off the register on January 1, 2027 and can't be listed again for five years.

This structure (c. 1861) replacing an earlier log church built in 1834, was built under the supervision of George Burger. Corbelled brickwork decorates the upper facade and walls. The front tower and steeple were added in the 1890's, and the base of the steeple once held a four-faced clock. St. John's is the oldest congregation in Willoughby. The Church was once used by three groups: the Lutherans, Evangelical Reformed and the Pennsylvania Dutch. The services were originally in German, with ministers from Buffalo officiating. The cemetery on the opposite side of Sodom Road was purchased by the Church in 1845.From the municipal heritage register
